The University of Rochester, also known as simply U of R, UR, or URoc, is a private, nonsectarian, research university located in Rochester, which is a city in Monroe County, in the US state of New York, with a population of more than 219 000 inhabitants, which makes it the 3rd most populous city in the state, after New York City and Buffalo.
URoc was established in 1850, first starting as a Baptist-sponsored institution, and it currently is `one of the smallest and most collegiate in character among the nation's top research universities.` It offers its students various educational opportunities, through the schools of: Arts, Sciences and Engineering, the Eastman School of Music, School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, Simon School of Business, and Warner School of Education, granting undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional degrees.
URoc's athletic teams are known as the Yellowjackets and they compete in the Division III of the NCAA, in the University Athletic Association and Liberty League. Their distinctive colors are Dandelion Yellow and Rochester Blue, and their mascot is URBee the Rochester Bee.
Since first opening its doors to students, the University of Rochester has produced numerous notable alumni, among them also being: Nobel laureates Vincent du Vigneaud (chemistry), Masatoshi Koshiba (physics) and Arthur Kornberg (physiology or medicine), political scientist William T. Bianco, medical geneticist Frederick R. Bieber, Academy Award nominated actor Robert Forster, and Robert Dicke, inventor of lock-in amplifier, and who made contributions to the fields of astrophysics, atomic physics, cosmology and gravity.
